I work from my cottage in Worcestershire, overlooking the beautiful Teme Valley where I live with my husband John, our big dog Basil and several happy chickens - Lilly, Tilly, Dotty, Meg and Ruby.

I
have always loved art and creativity - colours, shapes, textures, fabrics - all of which mesmerised me as a child. My mother loved to knit and sew and several members of the family, including my grandmother, worked in the glove-making industry based around Worcester at places like Dents and Fownes. On my father's side – and way before I was born – there was apparently a great uncle who had been a carpet designer at Brintons.  All of this probably explains why I was never very good at office work – something I think I did rather badly for several years..! Eventually I began to work at the things I love.

So... to cut a long story short - in the 80's and 90's I sold fabrics and wools. And, inspired by the fabulous yarns that were passing through my hands - I designed knitwear - trading as Gilly Moon.  Later, when the recession came, I fulfilled a childhood dream and studied fashion. At the age of 38 (better late than never), I went to the UWE at Bristol. My tutor was Janet Haigh the embroiderer, and it was her classes that inspired me to follow a textile-art route rather than pure fashion. Three years after graduating I began to teach.

More recently, I have chosen to focus on my art work. I work 2 dimensionally using paper and paint as well as stitch and cloth.
My pictures are based on the essence of a subject - as I see and feel it. They are often quite abstract and have little to do with perspective or realism but are much about colour, shapes and textures.

A work in progress......

I’m inspired very much by where I live - the beautiful countryside and the changing seasons have a very positive effect on how I work. That's not to say I'm not the world's worst procrastinator from time to time - because I am! But nature inspires me. I love the sea too and particularly rugged coastlines. Some of my Colourscape pieces were inspired by a few days my husband and I spent in Mousehole, Cornwall last year.

I must also mention here that I’m a member of art-upfront, a group of 8 very talented female artists! They, along with other friends and my family are a constant source of inspiration and support.
